Newport play areas shine after consultation-led transformation.

Newport Consultation

Local children have helped to select play equipment during the transformation of six play areas in Newport which have been designed and installed by Sutcliffe Play.

An extensive upgrade of the sites, enabled by capital and Section 106 funding, has made exciting and innovative play equipment available to children of a wide range of ages and abilities.

Equipment at four of the play areas – Marshfield Dairy, Thompson Avenue, Tredegar Park and Jubilee Gardens  – have been upgraded, while completely new play areas have been installed at the two others, Ribble Walk and Bettws Lane.

“Some of the sites were in desperate need of upgrading,” says Mike McGow, Parks and Outdoor Recreation manager at Newport City Council. “We wanted to increase the longevity of the play areas and make them more accessible for children.

“Local children and user groups were instrumental in the selection process. For each project we conducted consultation with the children who would be using the equipment, and their suggestions were incorporated into the designs.”

The chosen designs are tailored to suit each play area’s requirements. Tredegar Park, for example, is a city-based park with a high footfall, and features exciting equipment suitable for high volumes of children, such as a space net, a large Playzone unit and a range of inclusive equipment.

At Ribble Walk play area, which is within a large open access space, the play equipment makes use of natural features: for example, a large tunnel and slide are set into an embankment.

“We have had very positive feedback from local children to the new play areas,” says Mike. “The new equipment offers improved skill-building and development opportunities for children, and we’re sure it will benefit them for a long time to come.”

Tredeagar Park

Single Point Swing: This piece of play equipment is an exhilarating, free form swing on which children can sit or stand.  It can be used as a very dynamic piece of equipment or to give a more gentle motion for those less able, providing inclusive play.

Inclusive Nest Swing: Designed to hold several young children and those with special needs, this nest swing encourages teamwork in play.

Space Net: Children experience a wonderful sense of achievement and exhilaration in reaching the top of this space net and looking out over their surroundings.

Playzone Climber for All: There are six different ways to climb onto this Playzone, with higher agility accesses for the able bodied, a 2.4m high vertical net, a climbing wall and a rope climb. Equally challenging to less agile children are the large inclined inclusive net, a drag ramp and high visibility, extra wide steps. In effect this is two units in one, with fairly difficult step-ups and a hoop bridge between the two areas so children don’t stray into an area too challenging for them. Transfer decks and side entry/exit slides mean good access for children with mobility problems.

2.4m Cone Climber: This climber challenges children and helps develop strength and coordination.

Inclusive Rotating Dish: One of Sutcliffe Play’s most inclusive items, this rotating dish can be used for very fast, dynamic play. The rocking and rotating motion combined with the body support and security given by the dish shape make this piece of play equipment accessible to all.

Inclusive Springie: Specifically designed for more inclusive play, this springie’s seat enables a child to get on and off without assistance and gives good support whilst rocking.

Playzone Two in One Unit: This is Sutcliffe Play’s best-selling standard unit, because it is in effect two units in one. It spans a wide age range from 4-10, with a younger section comprising ladder and slide or fireman’s pole, and a more challenging area for older ones, featuring a pull-up ramp, a vertical net and a pole climb. A hand-over-hand acts as a child filter between the two areas.

Low Rotator: This challenging three station rotator requires strength, balance and co-ordination. Children control the speed themselves, with centrifugal forces meaning that as they lean in, the rotator goes faster, as they lean out, it slows down.

Trampoline: This trampoline is suitable for children of all ages and abilities and encourages social, physical and inclusive play.
