Learning Centre’s New Play Area Encourages Inclusive Play
Visitors to The Look Out Discovery Centre, a children’s education centre, can now benefit from a new play area suitable for children of all abilities. With an existing adventure play area that was particularly popular with visitors, the Look Out decided that an inclusive playground should be installed alongside to ensure that all visitors to the centre have an exciting place to play.
The Look Out Discovery Centre, situated in Swinley Forest, is an interactive science and nature centre with more than 90 fun-filled and educational exhibits suitable for all ages, and is a great day out for the family or for school groups.
Design and Build
The play area in Bracknell, Berkshire, provides play opportunities for children with a wide range of abilities, including wheelchair users. Sutcliffe Play designed a playground centred around a bespoke zigzagged walkway that rises gently to a height of around two metres.
All the equipment is designed to encourage inclusive play, with safety surfacing throughout to ensure the playground is suitable for children with limited mobility. It also features a range of sensory activity panels, a shelter with seats and a slide. The new equipment is located beside an existing adventure play area. It features elements such as a roundabout suitable for wheelchairs, musical play equipment and swings with harnesses.
“The new play area is really lovely, and has certainly met our expectations,” says Jacky Henderson, Centre Manager at The Look Out. “The equipment has plenty of sensory appeal, and has already been well received by children. We’re delighted that the centre now has even more appeal for children of all abilities.”
