Refurbished Playground Encourages Play

A Green Flag park in Bromsgrove has seen an exciting refurbishment of its play area, including the installation of a play system which presents physically challenging play opportunities.

Sanders Park is Bromsgrove’s Premier Green Flag Park, receiving more than 450,000 visitors a year and hosting many events and activities. The play area had been updated in 2005 and some of the original scheme was left in, which was in need of replacing along with the old safety surfacing.

The new equipment includes Mission, this exhilarating play system is designed to offer challenging physical play opportunities that will help keep children fit and active.

“One of our aims was to replace the old climbing units with something more innovative,” says Jackie Boreham, Parks and Green Space Recreation Officer for Bromsgrove and Redditch Councils. “We discovered the Mission unit being showcased at Playfair at Stoneleigh in Spring. We observed the coach-loads of children entering the fair and the fascination that the unit created, along with the sustained play opportunities available.”

The Mission unit, which was funded by Bromsgrove Council local 106 funding, Rotary Club donation and The Shortbreaks fund for disabled children and their families, has exciting features including ropes and nets, a spring platform and a climbing wall.

The playground also saw its old bark areas and decking replaced with accessible, colourful safety surfacing. The old equipment has been replaced with toddler and junior climbing equipment and many new swings including two inclusive swings from Sutcliffe Play.

Two large spinning nets and tyre swings have been re-located to improve the scheme and provide separated toddler and junior zones. A grassed picnic area was created with curved block paving and edging, stone seating and informal stepping stones.

Jackie adds: “The expressions of gratitude from parents and children have been fantastic – we have also received emails to thank us for our efforts in creating this great new facility!”

A letter from a parent, published in Bromsgrove’s local paper read: “I took my three boys, aged 11, eight and five, last week and they had a fantastic time. The new equipment is so well suited to older children and provides a challenge as well as something new and exciting to use. It will bring hours of fun, exercise and excitement to lots of children.”
